Ethiopia’s Gibe III hydropower plant on the Omo River has been inaugurated. When fully operational it is expected to produce 1,870 MW of power.The $1.57-billion hydropower plant, built by Italian construction firm Salini Impregilo SpA, is the third-largest dam in Africa.
Some of the power generated from the plant will be exported to neighboring countries. Currently the country exports power to Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan. Ethiopia also has agreements with Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Yemen.
